4 Seasons NP Postcards
Design Challenge
Using my previously designed Arches National Park Poster inspired by the Type Hike Posters, I researched and designed 3 other National Parks to create a series based on the four seasons to be used as postcards or poster prints. Each postcard will feature some iconic feature of each national park, and the colors will be chosen based on the theme and feel of the season. In addition, these postcards will then be translated into a webpage for visitor information.
Solution
Through my research, I picked national parks that are known for each season. Arches, located in Utah, is known for hot summers and I depicted this through showing summer rays and a warm color palette. Acadia is located in Maine which has cold winters, Cuyahoga Valley in Ohio is known for the color-changing leaves in the fall, and Mount Rainier in Washington State has wildflowers that bloom during springtime. Many of the arches at Arches National Park are really well known, so I wanted to feature a natural formation that isn't as popularized. This led to me choosing Balancing Rock as the main focal point, and to keep with how there are arched rock formations, I added Landscape Arch in the background. The typography also reads vertically to mimic the formation.
02 Fall - Cuyahoga Valley NP

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a less well-known park so I wanted to feature the most iconic feature which is Brandywine Falls. To capture the idea of fall, I picked the color scheme around the typical colors of the changing leaves.
03 Winter - ACadia NP

Due to Maine having a snowy winter, Acadia National Park was the perfect choice for this season. Using red and a sunset fit well with giving some color into the otherwise monochromatic color scheme.
04 Spring - Mount Rainier NP

I chose Mount Rainier for spring as it has a great display of wildflowers with the mountain framed nicely in the background. The use of a script font also ties into the whole feeling of growth and movement.
Conclusion
As as self-directed project, this was so fun to work on. It started off with just one poster I made in 2019 and because I enjoyed the process so much, I decided to expand it into a larger project and set myself color and composition parameters. It had to fit with the original poster so that it really looked like a series. Adding a webpage element was an extra challenge just for fun, as I imagined what if the National Park Service website had a specifically designed webpage for each park.
